Spaghetti Westerns were known as western genre movies made by Italy and other foreign countries. It was considered a dub version of western movies. A huge possibility that he used it for a war movie, was because WW2 was considered the bloodiest war in history, a lot of unpredictable and discusting events. Spaghetti Westerns are known for pushing point the standards of violence in movies. A couple ways I could think he subverted the audiences expectations was one, in the beginning the Nazi Officer acted like he was going to shoot the little girl, when in a moment of hesitation he let her going running away. The second way was when at the end Aldo went against command, and "killed" Hans. Lastly it would've been an expectation for Hitler to get away at the end of the movie, but he actually died from the two American Soldiers who killed him.
